Mactan, Cebu— The Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) on Monday hosted a media press conference and conducted a guided tour of key airport facilities as part of its ongoing preparations for the ASEAN Leaders’ Summit 2026.
Members of Cebu’s media were taken through MCIA Terminal 2 and the General Aviation Terminal where they got a glimpse of the recent upgrades and operational preparations done for another historic event in Cebu.
The tour around MCIA Terminal 2 was led by MCIAA Public Affairs Division, headed by Mary Ann M. Dimabayao, along with Edilyth Maribojoc-Calonge of Aboitiz InfraCapital Cebu Airport Corporation. Meanwhile, Engr. Louel Piel of the MCIAA Civil Works Division provided updates on ongoing works at the General Aviation area.
During the press briefing that followed at the MCIAA Board Room, MCIAA General Manager and CEO Julius G. Neri Jr. outlined the agency’s preparations, citing close coordination with government and private sector partners to ensure smooth and secure airport operations during the summit.
“Mactan-Cebu International Airport is deeply honored to serve as the first and last impression for distinguished heads of state and delegates attending the ASEAN Leaders’ Summit,” GM Neri said.
A joint operational plan has been activated between MCIAA and ACAC, in coordination with the ASEAN National Organizing Committee, the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, and security agencies. The approach focuses on managing the expected movements of heads of state, delegates, and media while maintaining regular airport operations.
GM Neri emphasized that security remains to be of utmost importance, saying,”We are fully prepared to welcome our Southeast Asian neighbors with warmth, while maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational excellence.”
Enhancements are being carried out across both airside and landside areas. These include improvements to the General Aviation Terminal, repainting of apron and perimeter markings, upgrades to water systems, and the designation of aircraft parking positions for ASEAN-related flights. Access roads have also been widened and improved, with added lighting and landscaping.
Inside the terminals, preparations include designated reception areas, assistance services for arriving delegations, and curated spaces that highlight Filipino craftsmanship and local cuisine. Additional installations such as an LED wall, banners, and wayfinding signages have been put in place in coordination with TIEZA.
MCIAA has also worked with local partners in producing uniforms and accessories for liaison officers, incorporating Cebu-made materials and products as part of the airport’s presentation for the regional event.
For its part, ACAC is completing operational requirements, including the setup of dedicated vehicle areas, lighting adjustments, power provisions for lounges, and ramp repainting. Final works are scheduled for completion within April.
MCIAA said these efforts are aimed at ensuring that Mactan-Cebu International Airport is fully prepared to handle the demands of the summit while providing a smooth and efficient experience for all passengers.
