MCIAA Hosts 2nd Get Airports Ready for Disaster (GARD) Workshop
The Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) successfully hosted the second Get Airports Ready for Disaster (GARD) Workshop from September 23-27, 2024, in collaboration with key partners, including the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF), World Food Programme (WFP), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and lead trainer DHL Group. This significant event brought together 38 participants from agencies such as the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, local government units, and various airport stakeholders.
Focusing on fortifying the airport’s disaster preparedness, the workshop assessed airport operations, highlighted areas for improvement, and strengthened coordination with key partners to ensure swift logistical responses during crises. MCIAA General Manager Julius G. Neri Jr. emphasized that the workshop reinforces the airport’s readiness to handle increased air traffic and life-saving operations in times of need.
PDRF Chief Resilience Officer Guillermo Luz reflected on the airport’s pivotal role during Typhoon Yolanda and shared plans to expand the GARD program to other airports. UNDP, represented by Mark Anthony Ramirez, reiterated their commitment to enhancing airport disaster capabilities through ongoing partnerships with DHL and WFP.
Now in its 15th year, GARD has become a cornerstone in ensuring airport hubs are prepared to manage the flow of goods and people during disasters, underscoring MCIAA’s unwavering commitment to safety, resilience, and operational integrity.
