Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu— The Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) proudly announces the official opening of its second parallel runway today, marking a major milestone in the airport’s expansion and modernization efforts. The new runway welcomed its maiden flights this morning at 0334H with the arrival of flight 7C2177 from Incheon and at 0342H with the departure of flight 5J 5108 to Kansai.
MCIAA General Manager and CEO Julius G. Neri, Jr. voiced optimism that the opening of the second parallel runway marks the beginning of enhanced operational efficiency and increased flight capacity for the country’s second busiest international gateways.
“The opening today of the second parallel runway is expected to significantly improve airside capacity, reduce aircraft holding times, and support future growth in passenger and cargo traffic,” Neri said.
The opening of MCIA’s second parallel runway is a significant development in time for MCIAA’s 35th Anniversary this July 31, 2025.
Earlier this week, MCIAA announced that the primary runway was temporary closed off due to immediate repair works, emphasizing that the move was necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers.
According to GM Neri, repairs on the primary runway is expected to be completed in a year’s time.
The inauguration of the parallel runway in January this year is a game-changer for Philippine aviation, ensuring that MCIA can accommodate growing air traffic demand, smoother operations as passenger and cargo volumes continue to rise, while strengthening the country’s position as a regional aviation hub.
The parallel runway has a total length of 2,560 meters, a new perpendicular taxiway length of 237 meters with 23 meters in taxiway width. It will be used when the main runway is closed during emergencies, runway closures, maintenance, etc., while guaranteeing airport operations continue without interruptions.
With these improvements, MCIA is not only positioned to handle growing air traffic but is also setting a new standard for world-class airports in the region.
